Oil

Traditional oil painting techniques often begin with the artist sketching the subject onto the canvas with charcoal or thinned paint. Oil paint is usually mixed with mineral spirits to create a thinner, faster or slower drying paint.  The oil paint is typically transferred to the painting surface using paint brushes, but there are other methods, including using palette knives and rags. Oil paint remains wet longer than many other types of artists’ materials, enabling the artist to change the color, texture or form of the figure. The versatility of painting with oils is the primary reason I enjoy working in this medium.  As an artist working with oil paints, I generally use the three primary colors – blue, red and yellow  -to mix all other colors, even black.  I love the process of building up the layers of oil paint, beginning with the darkest darks and ending with the lightest highlights.  Take a look and see if you can determine the value contrasts in each of my paintings!
